The Reaper’s Origins
Mortarion, also known as the Reaper, is the Primarch of the Death Guard Legion and a Daemon Prince of Nurgle, the Chaos God of decay and disease. Born on the toxic world of Barbarus, Mortarion endured a harsh upbringing under the rule of necromantic warlords who thrived in the planet’s poisonous atmosphere. His resilience and hatred for their oppression fueled a rebellion, ultimately leading him to overthrow his adoptive father and liberate his people. When discovered by the Emperor of Mankind, Mortarion reluctantly joined the Imperium, taking command of the Death Guard and forging them into a Legion renowned for their grim endurance.
The Fall to Chaos
Under Mortarion’s leadership, the Death Guard excelled in withstanding the harshest conditions, becoming infamous for their ability to thrive in toxic environments. However, during the Horus Heresy, Mortarion became disillusioned with the Emperor, siding with Horus in rebellion. The Legion’s downfall was sealed during a catastrophic Warp voyage where they succumbed to a devastating plague. In desperation, Mortarion pledged himself and his warriors to Nurgle, the Chaos God of decay, resulting in their transformation into plague-ridden servants. This marked their descent into eternal damnation as agents of corruption and despair.
The Daemon Prince of Nurgle
Following the Heresy, Mortarion was elevated to the rank of Daemon Prince, cementing his status as one of Nurgle’s most powerful champions. Now ruling from the Plague Planet within the Eye of Terror, Mortarion commands legions of Plague Marines and daemonic horrors, spreading pestilence and decay across the galaxy. His enduring legacy is one of relentless endurance and corruption, serving as a chilling example of how despair and disillusionment can lead even the mightiest to fall. Mortarion’s presence in Warhammer 40,000 is a grim reminder of the pervasive and corrupting influence of Chaos.
