Mortarion, known as the Reaper, is the Primarch of the Death Guard Legion and a Daemon Prince of Nurgle, the Chaos God of decay and disease. Born on the toxic world of Barbarus, Mortarion grew up under the tyranny of necromantic warlords and harbored a deep hatred for their oppression. His extraordinary resilience allowed him to survive the planet’s poisonous atmosphere, and he led a rebellion to overthrow his adoptive father and the other warlords. When the Emperor of Mankind found him, Mortarion was eventually persuaded to join the Imperium and take command of the Death Guard.
Under Mortarion’s leadership, the Death Guard became known for their grim determination and ability to fight in the most hostile environments. However, during the Horus Heresy, Mortarion grew disillusioned with the Emperor and sided with Horus, leading his Legion into the service of Chaos. The Death Guard’s descent into damnation culminated during a disastrous Warp voyage where they were ravaged by plague. In desperation, Mortarion pledged himself to Nurgle, transforming his Legion into plague-ridden servants of the Chaos God.
Following the Horus Heresy, Mortarion was elevated to the rank of Daemon Prince, becoming one of Nurgle’s most powerful champions. As a Daemon Primarch, he commands legions of Plague Marines and other horrific creations, spreading disease and despair across the galaxy. Mortarion resides on the Plague Planet within the Eye of Terror, continuing his grim work in the name of Nurgle.
Mortarion’s legacy is one of decay, corruption, and relentless endurance.
