Horus Lupercal in Oldhammer: Gary Harrod’s Vision of the Warmaster

The Warmaster’s Shadow

Being a massive Warhammer 40k fan, I can’t help but admire Gary Harrod’s Oldhammer artwork of Horus Lupercal, which perfectly captures the Primarch’s imposing presence. This black-and-white illustration depicts Horus in his intricately detailed armor, clutching a bolter, with a eerie skeletal trophy rack in the background, screaming that classic ‘80s Oldhammer style. In the lore, Horus Lupercal, Primarch of the Luna Wolves (later Sons of Horus), was the Emperor’s most trusted son and Warmaster of the Great Crusade, until his corruption by the Chaos Gods during the Horus Heresy. His fall led to the galaxy-wide civil war that birthed the grimdark 40k setting, ending with his tragic duel against the Emperor on the Vengeful Spirit. Harrod’s work here oozes the dark charisma of Horus, foreshadowing the betrayal that would shake the Imperium to its core. It’s a haunting piece that embodies the gothic, doomed vibe of Oldhammer, showing Horus at his peak before Chaos turned him into the ultimate traitor.
