Waaagh! in the Void: Pulp-Inspired Ork Battleship, Battlefleet Gothic 1989
This artwork depicts an Ork spaceship that Tony Hough created in 1989 for the early “Battlefleet Gothic” project at Games Workshop. The design captures the wild, ramshackle essence of Ork technology in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Tony Hought’s approach drew heavily from classic pulp science fiction illustrations of the 1930s and 1940s. Artists like Frank R. Paul, with his bold visions of futuristic spacecraft, provided strong inspiration for the overall aesthetic. Particularly influential was Elliot Dold, whose detailed and imaginative mechanical designs shaped the chaotic, over-the-top elements here. Even today, this piece reflects how those vintage pulp influences helped define the distinctive look of Ork void-faring vessels.
