World Eaters: Khorne’s Bloodthirsty Legion

This is a front and back cover illustration the artist, Nacho Molina did for Games Workshop book. Unfortunately, the image didn’t make it to the final as it was originally conceived.

The Origins of the World Eaters

The World Eaters are one of Warhammer 40,000’s most infamous Traitor Legions, known for their unmatched brutality and thirst for blood. Once the disciplined XII Legion of the Emperor’s Legiones Astartes, they excelled in close combat and devastating assaults. Under their Primarch, Angron—a tragic figure consumed by fury—the Legion adopted a preference for melee combat, relying on savage charges over tactical precision.

The Butcher’s Nails and Fall to Chaos

Their descent into Chaos began with the implantation of the Butcher’s Nails, cybernetic devices that suppressed higher thought and heightened aggression. This, combined with Angron’s hatred for the Emperor, made them perfect followers of Khorne, the Chaos God of blood and violence. By the Horus Heresy, they had fully embraced their dark patron, becoming Khorne’s chosen warriors, screaming their iconic battle cries: “Blood for the Blood God!” and “Skulls for the Skull Throne!”

Warbands of Khorne in the 41st Millennium

In the current era, the World Eaters are splintered into numerous warbands, each led by Chaos Champions or Daemon Princes seeking Khorne’s favor. Their tactics remain as devastating as ever, unleashing waves of axe-wielding Berzerkers supported by Daemon Engines and war machines. Their singular purpose is to spill blood and claim skulls for their dark god.

The Legacy of Unbridled Fury

The World Eaters are the embodiment of fury and bloodlust in the Warhammer universe. Utterly devoid of mercy or remorse, they exist only to spread death and destruction. Their legacy is one of violence and eternal devotion to Khorne, forever marked by their insatiable hunger for slaughter.
