Squats were an abhuman race in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, resembling dwarves with their short stature, toughness, and strong affinity for engineering and mining. Originating from high-gravity worlds colonized by humans, Squats adapted over generations, developing a distinct culture centered around kinship, craftsmanship, and a warrior ethos. They were known for their advanced technology, particularly in heavy weaponry and mechanized warfare.

In the lore, Squats maintained their own empire on the fringes of the Imperium of Man, often acting as allies while fiercely protecting their independence. Their military forces were characterized by heavily armored vehicles, bikes, and advanced weaponry, reflecting their industrial prowess. They were depicted as tough, resilient, and deeply loyal to their kin and traditions.

In the mid-1990s, Games Workshop phased out the Squats, citing difficulties in fitting them into the evolving Warhammer 40,000 narrative. Officially, they were largely wiped out by the Tyranids, though hints of surviving groups remained in the lore. This removal left a gap in the universe, but the Squats remained a fondly remembered faction by many fans.

Recently, Games Workshop reintroduced the concept of Squats as the “Leagues of Votann.” This new faction retains the core elements of the original Squats but with a modernized design and a deeper, more enigmatic narrative. The Leagues of Votann now represent an ancient, powerful civilization with a significant role in the current Warhammer 40,000 universe.
