Origins and Fall to Chaos
The Death Guard began as the XIV Legion of the Adeptus Astartes, forged during the Emperor's Great Crusade. Led by their Primarch Mortarion, they were renowned for their resilience and unyielding tenacity in battle, traits Mortarion instilled in them from his harsh upbringing on the toxic world of Barbarus. Their legacy of endurance made them a formidable force during the early days of the Imperium. However, during the Horus Heresy, their loyalty faltered. Stranded in the Warp and plagued by supernatural diseases, Mortarion and his warriors turned to Nurgle, the Chaos God of decay, for salvation. This pact transformed the Death Guard into grotesque, disease-ridden champions of Chaos.
Characteristics and Battlefield Presence
The Death Guard are infamous for their unparalleled durability, a gift—or curse—bestowed by Nurgle. Their bodies are bloated with corruption and decay, making them immune to pain and disease. On the battlefield, they are relentless, advancing through toxic mists and swarms of plague flies that herald their approach. Their corroded armor, covered in pustules and Nurgle's sigils, serves as both a shield and a symbol of their allegiance. Armed with rusted weapons that spread sickness with every strike, they fight alongside daemonic entities like Nurglings and Plaguebearers, creating a horrifying spectacle that saps the morale of their foes.
Organization and Warfare
The Death Guard is divided into seven Plague Companies, each led by a Chaos Lord or Daemon Prince. These companies operate with a degree of independence, yet all share an unshakable devotion to Nurgle and Mortarion.
